Nicole Payton

End-of-Life Planner, certified death doula*, and hospice volunteer

For more than 20 years, I’ve guided people through meaningful transitions, helping them bring clarity to what matters most. Along the way, I discovered a universal thread: beneath every decision about resources, care, or planning is a desire to be remembered, to preserve autonomy and authenticity, and to leave a legacy of love.

As a certified death doula and founder of Soulmark & Co., I now support individuals and loved ones in planning for aging, illness, and the end of life with compassion and intention. My work blends the practical with the heart, organizing essential details while also honoring personhood, values, and stories.

This isn’t about fear. It’s about peace of mind. It’s about creating comfort and connection, ensuring your voice is heard, and leaving behind a clear and lasting gift for the people you love.

I serve those who are ready to live, and die, with intention.

Why Soulmark Exists and Why This Work Matters to Me

I came to this work through love and loss. When I was a junior in college, my mom died suddenly from a scuba diving accident while I was studying abroad, and I became her medical power of attorney and executor almost overnight. Years later, my dad and I spoke openly about his wishes, but when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer during the pandemic, while I was going through IVF across the country, I learned just how hard it is to balance logistics with the emotional reality of anticipatory grief. Those experiences changed me. They showed me how often families and loved ones are left without guidance, without clarity, and without the language to talk about what matters most.

I’ve always been a naturally curious person, the kind of child who asked endless questions and loved connecting with people of all ages. That curiosity has become a steady guide in my work. Combined with my background in communication and public administration, it helps me bring structure, gentleness, and ease to conversations that are often intimidating.

I trained with Alua Arthur and the team at Going With Grace, earned certification through the National End-of-Life Doula Alliance, and completed hospice volunteer training. I am continually learning, deepening my practice, and staying rooted in what this work requires: care, clarity, and presence.

Before Soulmark, I spent two decades in fundraising for health and human service organizations, helping people articulate their values and shape their legacy. That experience taught me how to listen deeply, guide thoughtfully, and create space for meaningful decision-making, all of which I now bring to end-of-life planning.

Today, I help individuals and families prepare with intention. I support them in organizing what matters, having the conversations they’ve been avoiding, and creating clarity that brings peace to everyone involved. My work isn’t about fear, it’s about honoring personhood, preserving autonomy, and ensuring that every transition is met with compassion and care.
